Today’s featured Genealogy Blogger Spotlight is Vera Miller (“Lost Russian Family”).
YOUR NAME: Vera Miller
YOUR EMAIL: veramiller@verizon.net
BLOG URL: http://lostrussianfamily.wordpress.com/
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN FAMILY HISTORY/GENEALOGY? I didn't grow up with any cousins as a kid. I was wondering where was all my family. I knew my parents came from the former USSR but didn't realize how much family was still left behind
WHERE DID YOU GET THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR BLOG’S NAME? I want to help people find their family in Russia and Ukraine as much as I want to find more of my own family
WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT BLOGGING? I love sharing my journey in genealogy and finding my long lost family, giving inspiration and resources so others could do the same. I previously worked as a newspaper reporter so I still miss writing on a regular basis. Now, I am investigating my own family history.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE NEW FAMILY HISTORY/GENEALOGY BLOGGERS? I believe that there are many stories of our ancestors that need to be told. It is important to think about the story of their lives, instead of just looking for facts and pictures.
WHEN DID YOU BEGIN BLOGGING? I started blogging 2011, soon after the American Red Cross helped me find my long lost grandmother's sister in Russia. I got the call so close to my birthday and will never forget that call. I finally had the inspiration to start a blog.
WHAT ARE 2 OF YOUR MOST POPULAR BLOG POSTS? INCLUDE LINKS SO I CAN SHARE THEM, TOO! An unreal surprise on my birthday: https://lostrussianfamily.wordpress.com/2014/07/02/an-unreal-surprise-on-my-birthday/
A shocking surprise was waiting to be discovered for 6 years:
TELL US 5 FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF! IT MAY BE YOUR LIKES, DISLIKES, A FEW OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS, OR A FEW FUN FACTS ABOUT YOUR LIFE.
- My baptism record is in Russian.
- When I was a teenager, I would bike 15 miles for fun.
- Some chocolate makes me sneeze.
- I sleep with a teddy bear.
- I studied abroad at University of Manchester in England.
IF YOU COULD LEARN TO DO ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would learn to fly to save money to meet my family in Russia, Ukraine and Germany.
